Scale and polish

A scale and polish is a short, routine treatment carried out to treat mild gum disease (gingivitis) by removing small deposits of plaque or calculus from around the teeth in addition to removing stains from around the teeth. Your dentist will also discuss you current oral hygiene routine with you and if necessary will provide tips to improve. This is often carried out as part of your 6 monthly checkup.

  • No, if the patient is carrying out excellent oral hygiene at home there will be no plaque or calculus present and therefore no need for a scale and polish.

  • Some patients experience sensitivity during a scale and polish because of the cold air or water used during the procedure. If you experience day to day sensitivity then mention this to your dentist before the procedure and they can take steps to prevent this.
